Web Accessibility
Making websites accessible to everyone
Web Accessibility means making websites and mobile applications usable for everyone - whether they live with a disability or are temporarily limited in their abilities. By designing for accessibility, you support millions of users in a wide range of life situations.
Why is Web Accessibility Important?
Disabilities affect all people. While some of us live with a disability permanently, others are affected only in specific situations. People can...
- be blind from birth.
- abe blinded by the sun on the beach.
- become farsighted in old age.
- be deaf.
- have difficulty understanding the sound of a video at a noisy train station.
- live with motor disabilities.
- have only one hand available with a child in their arms.
The goal of accessibility is to provide equal access to web content for everyone in every situation, regardless of device.
Legal Requirements for Web Accessibility
The Barrierefreie-Informationstechnik-Verordnung (BITV 2.0) provides a clear legal basis for the accessible design of websites and mobile applications of public authorities in Germany; it implements EU Directive 2016/2102 and refers to EN 301 549/WCAG 2.1 AA.
At EU level, the European Accessibility Act (Directive 2019/882) came into force in 2019. It has been applicable in member states since June 28, 2025. In Germany, the EU law was transposed into the Accessibility Enhancement Act (BFSG) and the BFSG Ordinance (BFSGV). These directives require certain consumer-oriented products and services to be made accessible (including online shops, online banking, and ticket services); transitional periods until June 27, 2030, apply to existing contracts/existing products.
What Are the Advantages of Accessible Products?
Accessibility improves usability for all users and comes with additional advantages:
-
Enlargement of your target group
-
Better findability in search engines
-
Shorter loading times due to leaner source code
-
Compliance with the EU legislation (Accessibility Enhancement Act)
-
Easier maintenance due to separation of layout and content
-
Better readability on mobile devices
How Do We Support Web Accessibility?
Testing web accessibility
We start by analyzing your product to uncover fundamental barriers that may limit access for people with disabilities (based on WCAG 2.2). Using specialized tools and expert reviews, we identify potential obstacles early on and provide practical recommendations for improvement.
As a next step, we recommend usability testing with people with disabilities. They test your product under real-world conditions — using their own devices and assistive technologies. Since fundamental barriers have already been removed in the initial step, we can use the testing time specifically to uncover more detailed usage barriers.
We document our findings and recommendations in a usability report and discuss them with you in a dedicated workshop. If desired, our UX design team will support you in further removing barriers and developing inclusive solutions.
Design for accessibility
In addition to technical aspects, the accessibility of a website is directly related to the design in many respects. For example: How can sufficient contrasts be ensured while still complying with the colors of the corporate design?
Our UX design team helps you find answers to this type of questions and develops accessible design solutions for your website or application. We start by creating simple prototypes (prototyping), which are then transformed into a final, interactive concept.
