UX Design for Digital Medical Devices
Developing innovative, compliant medical devices
Are you looking for support in developing intuitive and standards-compliant medical devices? We design user-friendly interfaces, optimize workflows, and seamlessly integrate UX design into the development process – ensuring safe, practical, and innovative products.
Developing User-Centered and Standards-Compliant Medical Devices
Successful medical devices not only meet regulatory standards but also stand out with innovative and user-friendly solutions. To achieve this, usability engineering should be an integral part of the development process from the very beginning – not just an afterthought.
We follow this Human-Centered Design principle, as required by IEC 62366-1, in all our projects. By conducting in-depth analyses of target groups, use contexts, and workflows, we develop interactive prototypes that can be tested and optimized at an early stage.
Our interdisciplinary team supports you throughout the entire development process. User research, design, and evaluation are closely interconnected and provided from a single source. We advise you on the efficient and standards-compliant integration of usability engineering into your development process and ensure seamless documentation that meets the requirements of notified bodies.
We are also happy to support you in early-stage development and innovation projects to explore and validate potential solutions at an early stage – helping you create user-centered, market-ready medical devices.
Analyzing the Context of Use & Defining Requirements
Through the systematic analysis of all requirements (user, business, technical, and regulatory), we lay the foundation for successful product development.
Identifying user requirements
A deep understanding of users and their work environment forms the foundation of the design process. We analyze various target groups – from medical professionals to patients – and document their specific needs and challenges, for example, in the form of task models or user journeys.
Through on-site observations and contextual interviews in clinics and medical practices, we examine how medical devices are used in everyday settings. We analyze complex workflows and derive use scenarios from them. All insights into user profiles and the use environment are documented in compliance with standards and can be directly incorporated into the use specification.
Examples of context-specific user requirements:
-
Environmental conditions
e.g., lighting in the operating room, disruptive acoustic signals, or space constraints in treatment rooms
-
Interaction requirements
e.g., operability of touchscreens with a sterile cover, gloves, or under time pressure
-
Ergonomics & readability
e.g., safe use from a 1.5-meter distance, clear instructions, and guided interaction concepts
-
Intuitive operation without expert knowledge

Integrating stakeholder requirements
In addition to usability requirements, regulatory guidelines, business objectives, and technical constraints also play a crucial role in product design. In requirements workshops, we gather all relevant requirements and collaboratively develop the product vision with your team.
Based on the Design Input Document (DID), we analyze technical processes and their interaction with hardware components, such as instruments or camera systems. In close collaboration with risk management, we ensure that all risk mitigation measures are properly considered.
Concept Development & Prototyping
Early visualizations and interactive prototypes make ideas tangible, enable early user feedback, and provide a solid foundation for informed decision-making.
A core principle of user-centered design is to visualize and iterate ideas at an early stage. In collaborative workshops, we explore various solutions and define the direction of the product.
Based on this foundation, we create digital prototypes with minimal effort, providing a concrete discussion basis for aligning different stakeholders.
Even complex systems and AI-driven functions can be simulated in interactive click dummies. This makes the product tangible and enables the product team to refine features in a targeted manner.
Through formative evaluations with real users, we gather valuable feedback from the target group early in the conceptual phase. This ensures that the solution is optimally adapted to real-world conditions while preventing use errors and use difficulties. We share these insights with risk management, enabling the implementation of additional risk mitigation measures if necessary.
Even before market launch, our prototypes and concepts provide an opportunity to showcase innovative products at conferences or trade fairs, helping position your company in the market.
Design Iterations Based on User Feedback
Through regular user feedback and iterative concept optimization, we ensure a precise, user-centered design. Identified use errors can be addressed at an early stage.
Continuous user feedback is essential for developing a practical and user-centered product. We integrate regular formative evaluations directly into the design process – either as quick feedback sessions on specific design questions or as comprehensive evaluations of the overall concept.
Depending on the development stage, we apply various methods from our portfolio, such as usability testing or usability inspections.
The design team experiences real user behavior firsthand and directly incorporates the insights into the next iteration.
Comprehensive documentation ensures that requirements are precisely recorded and use errors are systematically captured. This makes the summative evaluation at the end of the process a mere formality.

User Interface Design & Documentation
We design intuitive, brand-aligned, and accessible user interfaces – precisely documented and seamlessly integrated into development.
Once the concept is functionally finalized, we refine the product with compelling and aesthetically pleasing design. We create interfaces that are not only visually appealing but also perfectly tailored to their intended use. Accessibility also plays a key role, such as considering color vision deficiencies.
Product innovation is reflected not only in functionality but also in design, while maintaining a clear and consistent brand identity.
In addition to visual design, we support the creation of the User Interface Specification and ensure seamless integration with development. We write tickets, define design elements and interactions, and guide the implementation process.
To maintain consistently high quality, we oversee design control throughout development. Style guides and component libraries ensure consistency and efficient implementation – resulting in a seamlessly integrated, high-quality product.
